Tissue paper, in simple terms called as tissue, is a lightweight paper used for several purposes. Tissue papers are mainly made from recycled paper pulp. The manufacturing of tissue papers is quite similar to that of normal papers. Similar processes such as pulping, cleaning, compressing are applied in both. The main properties of tissues are absorptivity, minimal weight, minimal thickness, high volume, brightness, softness, appearance, and most importantly, comfort.
Tissue paper is produced by papermaking machines. Like other paper products, cellulose fibers are the main content of tissue paper. The fiber used in tissue making may be virgin or recycled/mixed. Tissues are mainly produced out of the recycled pulp. The virgin fiber is mixed into the pulp to give it soft structure. However, high-quality tissue paper is entirely made from virgin pulp.
Tissue paper machines include the core making devices, rewinding machine, the embossing unit, bandsaw cutter, perforating unit, etc. The tissue making process involves below steps –
Pulp and Dye: This is the first step in making soft tissue paper. Firstly, paper pulp is created from recycled materials. The fibers are mixed with the wood pulp and then bleached and washed. Then the mixture is placed in a mixing tank where components like dyes are added. All tissue papers are normally dyed white. They can be dyed with other colors too.
Pressing: This is the second stage. Here, the pulp is pressed to squeeze the moisture out of it. The main purpose behind pressing is to make it dry and easy for further operations.
Creping: In this stage, the pulp is processed through the dryer and is heated with steam. The dryer helps in setting the pulping process through creping. A roller is used to dry up the pulp with excessive heat and fine blades adjust the tissue to the desired thickness.
Cutting and Reeling: This is the final stage. In this stage, the long lengthy paper is cut into the required sizes. The tissue is cut down to different sizes as required to serve its particular purpose.

The making of tissue paper involves different processes as described below –
Tissue Paper Pulping Process
Earlier, the tissue paper was made from the tree logs which costed the cutting down of trees. However, now things have changed. Industries have become more concerned about nature. This has paved the way for recycled tissue papers. The pulp that is necessary for the making of tissue papers is obtained from recycled papers, fibers, and other raw materials, and is prepared in the pulping machine.
The raw material that is collected for recycling is collected in a mixer tank (pulper) and stirred well with adding a large amount of water and other necessary chemicals such as sodium sulfide, limestone, etc.mainly to soften the pulp and improve its color.
Pressing Process in Tissue Mill
Once the pulp is ready as desired, it is operated for the removal of water from the pulp. The mixture is sent to the screeners that let the water and other liquid material escape through the pulp so that we are left with fibers on the belt.
These fibers are then transferred to Yankee. A Yankee is a large heated roller that makes the fabric dry instantly. Once the fabric is dry, it is developed into rolls. These rolls are then sent to the converting machines.

The tissue from the above rolls is collected and its plies are split and passed through an embossing roller. The embossing roller softens the tissue paper and gives it a smooth and easy structure. The plies are removed from the rollers are stick together with glue. The tissue is then separated into smaller forms by pulling the sheets apart. The tissue now can be spread onto flat surfaces or wounded onto the cylindrical rolls. The rolls are available in different sizes of diameters. A rotating blade is used to cut down the tissue rolls into smaller sizes.

The main properties of tissue papers are absorbency, lightweight, minimal thickness, brightness, and low mass. These properties of tissues make it useful in various applications from hygiene to packaging.
Uses of Tissue Paper
Tissue papers are available in ranging thicknesses and forms but are principally used for hygienic purposes as they are anti-bacterial, facial tissue is developed extra smooth to take care of our face, toilet tissues used in toilets, paper towels used for wiping hands and face, table napkins and, sometimes used as packing tissue.
